Finally passed my Missouri Notary exam after two attempts — here's what helped

So I just got my results back and I'm officially a commissioned Missouri notary! Honestly didn't expect it to take two tries, but here we are. The first time I went in pretty underprepared — I figured it couldn't be that hard and barely skimmed the handbook. Wrong. Failed by four points and felt embarrassed walking out of there.

The second time I actually sat down with a proper MO NOTARY study guide and worked through it section by section. The stuff about prohibited acts, acknowledgment wording, and journal requirements tripped me up the most. I also found a MO NOTARY practice test online that had questions formatted really close to the real thing, which helped me figure out exactly where my gaps were. Spent maybe 12-15 hours total over two weeks.

For anyone gearing up for this — don't underestimate the Missouri-specific statutes. The test isn't just general notary knowledge, it's very state-law focused. What exam tips do others have? Especially curious if anyone else struggled with the acknowledgment vs. jurat distinction like I did.

Congrats! I took mine last spring and the acknowledgment vs. jurat question is SO common on there. What helped me was just drilling that difference until it was automatic — an acknowledgment is about identity, a jurat is about oath. Once that clicked, a whole chunk of questions got easier. The journal entry requirements are also heavily tested, more than I expected.

I'm scheduled for mine in three weeks and this thread is making me nervous lol. I've been using the Secretary of State's official handbook as my main resource but I feel like I need more practice questions. Did the practice test you used cover things like notarizing for relatives or conflict of interest scenarios? Those edge cases seem like they could be sneaky.

Those edge cases definitely show up. The prohibited acts section is where a lot of people drop points — things like notarizing your own signature or documents where you have a financial interest. Worth reviewing that section twice at minimum. Good luck in three weeks, you've got time!
