Failed MMC exam twice — what finally worked for my third attempt

I'm not going to sugarcoat it: I failed the MMC exam twice before I finally passed last month, and I want to be honest about what went wrong and what actually helped. My first attempt I went in way too confident — I'd been doing electrical work for six years and figured the practical experience would carry me. It didn't. The code theory sections absolutely wrecked me.

Second time I bought a study guide from a bookshop and read it cover to cover. Still failed, but closer. What finally made the difference was grinding through an MMC practice test every single day for three weeks. Not just doing them, but reviewing every single wrong answer and understanding the why behind it. Especially transformer calculations and load calculations — those showed up way more than I expected.

My exam tips for anyone starting out: don't skip the NEC code sections even if they feel boring, and time yourself on practice questions from day one. I was running out of time on the actual exam until I forced myself to work faster in practice. Happy to answer questions about specific topics if anyone's stuck.

This resonates so much. I passed on my second attempt and the thing that saved me was treating practice tests like the real thing — no open book, strict timer. I also made flashcards for conductor ampacity tables because I kept second-guessing myself mid-exam. The motor circuit questions tripped me up first time around too. What state did you test in? The emphasis on certain code sections varies more than people realize.

The point about reviewing wrong answers is underrated advice. Most people just check their score and move on. Spending 20 minutes understanding one wrong answer beats doing five more questions you half-understand. Congrats on passing — third time takes real persistence.

Can I ask how much time you were spending daily on studying? I'm about six weeks out from my scheduled date and honestly feeling overwhelmed. I've got the study guide but I can't tell if I'm retaining anything or just reading words on a page. Did you use any specific practice test resources or just whatever you could find online? Also — did grounding and bonding come up a lot for you? That's my weak spot right now.
