Okay so I've been meaning to write this for a while because when I was studying I kept coming back to these forums looking for real advice and mostly just found generic stuff. So here goes. I took AP Physics C: Mechanics this past May and honestly thought I failed walking out of the free response section. Got my score last week — 4. Not a 5, but I'll take it.

The thing that changed everything for me was drilling mechanics specifically instead of trying to review everything at once. I wasted like three weeks doing broad review and barely retained any of it. Once I narrowed down and really hammered ap physics classical mechanics & kinematics problems until I could do them in my sleep, my confidence on rotational dynamics and energy conservation just followed naturally. Kinematics is like the foundation — if your vector decomposition is shaky, everything downstream suffers.

For exam prep I used a mix of old FRQs from the College Board site and timed practice sets. The timed part is crucial. I kept running out of time during the actual advanced placement physics test on my first few practice runs, not because I didn't know the material but because I was second-guessing my setups. Doing a full timed practice test every weekend for about six weeks trained me to commit to an approach and move on instead of spiraling.

Also — and nobody told me this — the FRQ graders are basically looking for physics reasoning written out, not just the right number. I started explicitly writing my assumptions and the principles I was applying before jumping into math. My practice test scores went up noticeably after I started doing that. You can get partial credit on almost every sub-part if your reasoning is visible.

If you're in the middle of studying right now and feeling like it's not coming together, that feeling is normal. Mine didn't click until about two weeks before the exam and I genuinely thought I was going to bomb it. Just stay methodical and don't skip the units that feel hard — those are usually the ones worth the most points.

This is basically my experience too, just a few weeks behind you. The free response section is where I thought I blew it — I kept second-guessing my rotational inertia setups and ended up over-explaining steps I didn't need to show. What actually clicked for me was stopping to draw a clean force diagram before touching the math, every single time, even when it felt obvious. Sounds basic but I was skipping that under pressure and making sign errors that cascaded.

The one thing I'd add: the work-energy theorem saved me more points than any formula sheet memorization. There were two FRQ problems where I started with Newton's laws and hit a wall, backed up, switched to energy methods, and it fell apart in like three lines. Once I trained myself to see "oh this is a path problem" vs "this is an instantaneous force problem," the multiple choice got way faster too.

Also did a ton of timed practice through an ap physics practice test site that had questions broken down by topic — mechanics specifically. Grinding the oscillations and gravitation questions there is what got me comfortable with the stuff I'd been avoiding. Congrats on getting through it, and yeah, the relief of seeing that score is real.

The free response section is what gets most people — I had the exact same experience junior year where I'd walk out thinking "I knew all of that" and then realize I'd made some dumb algebra error halfway through a multi-part problem and cascaded the wrong answer through the rest of it. What actually turned things around for me was drilling kinematics specifically until it was almost automatic. I used the ap physics classical mechanics & kinematics practice set a lot, and what I liked was that the questions weren't just plug-and-chug — they'd set up scenarios where you had to decide which kinematic equation even applied first, which is honestly the part I kept messing up.

The explanations after each question were what did it for me. Not just "here's the answer" but walking through the reasoning, which meant when I hit a similar setup on the actual exam I had a mental model to fall back on instead of panicking. Rotational kinematics especially — I kept confusing myself on moment of inertia problems until I'd seen enough variations that the patterns started sticking.

This is exactly what I needed to read right now. I'm in the middle of cramming for retakes and the free response section is killing me — specifically the rotational dynamics problems. Like I can do torque calculations fine in isolation, but the second they throw in a system where something's both rotating and translating (rolling without slipping, or a yo-yo type setup), my brain just stalls. Did you have a specific way you approached setting up those problems, or did it just click after doing enough of them?

The part I keep messing up is knowing when to use the center of mass as my reference point versus the contact point. My teacher said "just pick the one that cancels out the most unknowns" which, okay, theoretically makes sense, but under exam pressure I freeze. Did that ever trip you up, or was that one of the things that felt more intuitive once you really got rotational inertia down?

This is actually really helpful, thank you. I'm currently about three weeks out from my exam and rotational dynamics is completely destroying me. Like I get the basic torque stuff but the moment of inertia calculations for composite objects? I set up the integral, I think I'm doing everything right, and then my answer is off by some weird factor. Do you remember if you had trouble with that specifically, and if so what actually made it click?

The parallel axis theorem especially. I keep applying it in situations where I think it applies and then second-guessing myself halfway through the problem. My teacher explained it but honestly the explanation felt more like "here's when to use it" without really getting into why it works geometrically. Which means I can follow examples but the moment a problem is framed slightly differently I freeze.

Also curious whether you'd say the free response grading is lenient if you get the setup right but mess up the algebra. I've heard people say you can still get most of the points if your method is clearly correct, but I don't know if that's actually true or just wishful thinking people tell themselves.

Sounds obvious but I kept skipping that step when I "thought I knew" the setup and it was costing me.

The rotational kinematics stuff finally made sense when I stopped thinking of it as its own unit and just mapped every single formula back to its linear equivalent. α is just a, τ is just F, I is just m. Once that parallel structure locked in, the equations weren't things to memorize anymore. My teacher said this for months and it didn't hit until like two weeks before the exam.

Also the multiple choice goes faster than you think. I burned too much time on a few mechanics problems in the first half and had to rush energy conservation at the end — wouldn't do that again. If you've got the conceptual foundation solid, trust it and keep moving.

I failed my first attempt badly. Like, embarrassingly bad. What changed for me the second time was actually going back to fundamentals instead of just doing practice tests over and over — I'd been skipping the stuff that felt "too basic" and it was killing me on the FRQs. I spent a full week just drilling kinematics from scratch using free ap physics classical mechanics kinematics resources I found, and honestly that's when things started clicking because so much of the harder mechanics stuff just builds on it.

The other thing nobody told me is that the scoring on free response is more forgiving than you think if you show your reasoning, even when you get the wrong answer. Update for anyone following this thread — I just scored a 72% on my last full practice test, which honestly felt amazing compared to the 48% I was pulling two weeks ago.
