Failed MHC exam twice — what am I missing in my prep?

So I'm officially 0 for 2 on the MHC exam and I'm starting to question everything. First attempt I scored a 68%, second time a 71% — I need a 75% to pass. I've been using a textbook and some random YouTube videos, but clearly that's not cutting it. The cultural competency and crisis intervention sections keep wrecking me.

A coworker who passed last year swore by using a dedicated MHC practice test bank to drill herself before the real thing. She said actually simulating test conditions made a huge difference because the wording on the real exam is really specific and tricky. I've been reading my study guide front to back but maybe I'm not applying the material the way the exam expects?

Has anyone else been in this spot? I'm giving myself 8 weeks before attempt three. Would love to hear what finally clicked for people — specific resources, study schedules, exam tips, anything. I can't afford a fourth attempt financially or emotionally at this point.

I was in almost the exact same spot — passed on my third try with an 82%. What helped me most was stopping the passive reading and switching to active recall. I'd do 30-40 practice questions every single day and review every wrong answer until I understood the reasoning, not just the answer. The MHC exam loves to test how you'd actually respond in a session, so you have to think clinically, not academically. Give yourself at least two full mock exams under timed conditions in the last two weeks.

The cultural competency section tripped me up too. What I didn't realize until later is that the exam is very CACREP-aligned, so if your grad program was under a different framework some of the terminology feels slightly off. I'd recommend cross-referencing your study guide with CACREP standards directly. Also — and I can't stress this enough — the ethics questions have a specific hierarchy of priorities the exam expects you to follow. Once I mapped that out explicitly it stopped feeling random.

Eight weeks is totally workable. Honestly the biggest exam tip I'd give anyone is to stop studying the night before. Your brain needs the reset. You clearly know the material — a 71% on a hard licensing exam isn't nothing. It's the test-taking strategy that closes that last gap, not more content review.
