Finally passed my MES exam after two attempts — here's what worked

So I finally got my MES certification last week and honestly I'm still in shock. Failed my first attempt back in February by 4 points — four points — and spent the next three months completely rethinking my approach. The first time around I just read through the manual and figured that'd be enough. Spoiler: it wasn't.

What actually made the difference was grinding through a solid MES practice test bank consistently, like every other day for six weeks. I'd do 30-40 questions, review every wrong answer, and write a one-line note on why I got it wrong. That pattern recognition really sticks. I also found a MES study guide that broke down the maintenance management and reliability sections way better than the official material does — those two domains wrecked me in round one.

For anyone prepping right now, my biggest exam tips: don't skip the asset management lifecycle questions, they show up constantly, and time yourself strictly during practice. I was consistently running over on the longer scenario questions. Anyone else retaking or currently studying? Happy to answer questions.

Congrats! Seriously, failing by 4 points and coming back is rough — a lot of people just give up at that point. I'm sitting for mine in July and the reliability and maintainability section is killing me. Did you use any specific MES practice test resources or just the ones through the certification body? I feel like I'm reading the same material in circles without it clicking.

The time management point is huge. I passed on my first attempt but barely — finished with like three minutes left. The scenario-based questions are deceptively long and I almost didn't budget enough time for the back half. My tip: flag anything that takes more than 90 seconds and move on. Come back with fresh eyes. Also the MES study guide from the professional association website is underrated, most people overlook it.

Four points on a retake would've broken me lol. Good on you for sticking with it. Asset management lifecycle was my weak spot too — once I mapped out the phases visually it finally made sense. Sometimes you just need a different format.
