I've been doing a lot of searching on "ABCN" and while the certification looks solid on paper, I'm getting mixed signals about how much employers actually care in 2026.
Some job postings list it as required, some say "preferred," and some don't mention it at all even for roles where it seems relevant.
For those of you who have your ABCN certification — has it actually opened doors or increased your rate? Or has the job market shifted to the point where it's table stakes rather than a differentiator?
Context: I'm already working in the field and trying to decide whether to prioritize ABCN or invest the same time into ABCN - American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology.
Also — how current does the cert need to be? If I pass now, is a 2-3 year old cert still valuable or do employers want recent?
If you're looking for a starting point, the free abcn credential requirements is worth trying — the questions closely match what you'll see on test day.
Quick data point: I spent 4 weeks studying, 2-3 hours a day, and passed with a 73%.
The section on ABCN exam took me the longest to feel confident about. Eventually I just drilled practice questions until I could answer them without hesitation.
What testing center did you end up booking? Some of them have much shorter wait times than others right now.
Failed my first attempt, came back to this thread for motivation. The advice about really understanding why wrong answers are wrong — not just memorizing the right ones — is the single best piece of advice I've seen for the ABCN. Rebuilding my prep around that principle now. Using abcn test for the concept review.
This thread saved me from making the same mistakes. The tip about practice test being weighted heavily is accurate — I adjusted my study time based on this and it made a real difference. Also seconding the recommendation for abcn test.
For anyone finding this thread later: the ABCN is passable with consistent effort, even working full time. I studied 51 minutes a day for 13 weeks. The abcn professional development and advocacy kept me honest about where my gaps were instead of just drilling things I already knew.
