How long did your full BCBA certification journey actually take?

I've seen wildly different timelines from different people and I'm trying to figure out a realistic end date for my own journey to becoming a board certified behavior analyst. Some people say two years from starting grad school, others say five years if you're working full-time while completing your degree and fieldwork simultaneously.

My situation: I finished my master's degree last May, started supervised fieldwork in August, and I'm working 30 hours per week as an RBT while accumulating hours. At my current pace I'll hit the 2,000-hour mark around this time next year. Then there's the application window, exam scheduling, and wait time for results.

For those who've gone through the whole process: where did time unexpectedly get eaten up? I've heard the BACB application review can take 4–6 weeks and exam scheduling slots book out fast in certain regions. I'm already using the BCBA Behavioral Assessment Methods practice quizzes now so I'm not cramming at the end, but I want to pace myself realistically.

Any honest account of your timeline — including setbacks — would be helpful. I'd rather plan for the real version than an optimistic one.

My total timeline was 4 years 3 months from starting grad school to getting results. The unexpected delays were: my first supervisor left the company and I lost two months of hours while finding a replacement, and I underestimated how long the BACB eligibility review took — submit everything well before your planned test window. Exam slots in my metro area book out about 6–8 weeks, so factor that in. The actual exam day was anticlimactic compared to the waiting. Start your application paperwork 3 months before you hit your final hour count.
