Just finished the ADM and wanted to give a detailed breakdown of the difficulty by section for people currently studying.

The practice test questions were the most challenging by far — not because they're tricky, but because they require you to apply concepts rather than just recall them. I studied that section twice as hard after my practice scores showed a consistent gap there.

The easier wins are in the foundational areas where memorization pays off. I recommend starting with the adm ethical, legal, & regulatory considerations in addiction medicine to get a feel for question style. For the conceptual side, adm test gives you the background context the practice tests assume you already have.

My advice: don't neglect the applied sections even if the theory feels comfortable. The exam is designed to catch people who understand concepts in isolation but struggle with real-world scenarios.

For what it's worth — I've taken the ADM twice now. First attempt I underestimated the exam prep questions. Second time I focused almost exclusively on applied practice and passed comfortably. The difference is real.

Really helpful breakdown, thanks for sharing. I'm at week 5 of my ADM prep and the practice test section is exactly where I'm struggling too. Going to try the approach you described and see if it moves my scores.

For the people asking about study timelines: I studied 87 minutes per day for 12 weeks working full time. It's absolutely doable without burning out. The key is consistency — missing days hurts more than extending your timeline.

This is exactly the thread I needed. I sit for my ADM in 4 weeks and have been second-guessing my prep. The exam prep area you mentioned is definitely my weak spot. Thanks for the honest breakdown.

Late to this thread but wanted to add — the practice test section trips up more people than any other part. If you're scoring below 73% there in practice, treat it as your only focus for at least a week before moving on. Breadth at the expense of depth in that area is a common mistake.
