Failed ME exam twice — what actually helped you pass it?

I'm at my wit's end here. Took the Mechanical Engineering PE exam last October, missed by 11 points. Retook it in April and missed by 6. I've been using the same NCEES reference handbook approach everyone recommends but clearly something isn't clicking. I have a strong background in thermal/fluids from my job but the machine design and dynamics sections are killing me every time.

What finally worked for you? I've heard mixed things about which ME practice test resources are actually worth the money versus the ones that just recycle easy questions. I tried one popular study guide last round but the problems felt way too straightforward compared to what showed up on the actual exam. My exam is scheduled for October and I really can't afford a third attempt — both financially and mentally.

Specifically looking for exam tips on how to handle the breadth section time pressure. I keep running out of time on the afternoon depth section too. Any help appreciated.

The gap between practice problems and the real exam is real — most commercial prep books are just too easy. What changed things for me was doing timed 40-question blocks under strict conditions. No pausing, no peeking at solutions until the whole block was done. Also, don't neglect machine design even if it's not your strength. I spent 3 focused weeks on shafts, bearings, and fatigue and it probably saved me. Passed on my second attempt with about 180 hours total prep.

Six points off after two attempts means you're close — don't give up. Target your weak spots ruthlessly instead of reviewing everything. Pull your diagnostic report and just live in whatever killed you. Three months is plenty of time if you're focused.

Honestly the NCEES practice exams are the closest thing to the real difficulty level. I did each one twice — once cold, then again after reviewing every missed problem. For time management, I flagged anything taking more than 4 minutes and moved on immediately. Came back at the end. That alone probably got me 8-10 extra points. What depth module are you sitting for? The strategies are pretty different depending on thermal vs. mechanical systems.
