Finally passing my Maine DMV test after failing twice — what actually worked

So I failed the Maine written test twice and was honestly embarrassed about it. I'd skim through the handbook the night before, think I had it, then get to the DMV and completely blank on stuff like right-of-way at intersections or the exact stopping distances. Second time I missed by two questions. Humiliating when there are teenagers passing on their first try.

What finally got me through on my third attempt was actually being systematic about it. I spent about a week using a ME DMV practice test site every evening for maybe 30-45 minutes instead of just reading. The repetition of seeing the same question formats helped way more than rereading the handbook. I also grabbed a study guide that broke down the road signs section separately — that alone probably saved me 3-4 questions.

Passed with a 88% last Thursday. If you're prepping right now, don't sleep on the school zone and construction zone speed limits — those tripped me up both times I failed. Anyone else have topics that caught them off guard?

The stopping distances got me too. I had no idea Maine tests so heavily on that. What helped me was converting them to car lengths instead of feet — way easier to remember that way. Also the blood alcohol limit questions are straightforward but you'd be surprised how many people second-guess themselves. I did three practice sessions the morning of my test and passed with a 92.

Switch to practice tests, seriously. Reading the handbook straight through is brutal. Do the practice questions first, then look up whatever you keep getting wrong in the handbook. Way more efficient. Also budget extra time at the DMV — the Augusta location has been running about 45 minutes behind lately.

Congrats on passing! Quick question — did the actual test feel similar to the practice questions you were doing, or were there a lot of surprises? I'm scheduled for next week and a little nervous. I've been going through the handbook but honestly it's so dry I keep zoning out halfway through a page. Maybe I should switch to practice tests instead.
