Time management during SVOP exam — how fast are you supposed to go?

Did a full timed practice test today and ran out of time with 15 questions left. Definitely have a time management problem.

The SVOP - Small Vessel Operator Proficiency exam has 121 questions and the time limit is 102 minutes by my understanding. That works out to roughly 66 seconds per question — which should be doable except I keep stopping on "svopo" type questions.

My bad habit: I over-analyze questions I'm unsure about rather than making a best guess and moving on.

Any strategies that worked for you? Specifically:
- Do you go through once and skip hard questions to come back to?
- How many questions on "svop" should I expect — is it worth the time investment?
- Is the real exam usually easier to pace than practice tests, or harder?

I'm good enough on the content, I think — it's purely pacing that's failing me.

The honest answer is: it depends a lot on your background.

If you're already working in this field, the SVOP exam is testing knowledge you probably use daily. The "svop" sections will feel familiar.

If you're coming in from outside, give yourself an extra 2 weeks and really focus on the practical application questions.

The practice tests here are worth doing repeatedly — I did the same test bank multiple times and found new questions I'd missed each time.

What helped me most with svopes specifically: stop thinking about it as a topic to memorize and start thinking about the types of decisions it's asking you to make. Once I shifted to that frame, my SVOP scores in that section jumped about 11 points within a week.

Coming back to this thread because I just passed my SVOP yesterday. Everything people said about the svopes section is spot on — that was the hardest part for me too. For anyone still studying, don't skip the applied questions in the svop. They're the closest to what you'll actually see.

Honestly I almost quit halfway through my prep. Did the same thing you did, ran out of time on my first full practice run and figured I just wasn't built for this. I didn't believe the "66 seconds a question" math would ever feel natural. But it does once you stop reading every question three times. A lot of them you actually know cold, so you bank time on those and spend it on the chart and navigation ones that actually need thinking. Don't sit and agonize. Flag it, guess, move on, come back if there's time left.

What turned it around for me was just doing question sets over and over until the easy stuff became automatic. I hammered these free svop boat handling questions until I wasn't even thinking about the timing anymore, it just sorted itself out. First timed test I bombed the clock. By the real exam I finished with like 12 minutes to spare and passed. So yeah, keep going. The speed comes way faster than you'd think.
