Failed MACE twice — what finally helped me pass on third attempt

So I've been a med aide for about two years now and finally decided to get serious about the MACE. Failed it in January with a 68% and again in March with a 71% — passing is 75%, so I kept just missing it. I was honestly ready to give up. My DON recommended I stop just reading the Hartman's textbook cover to cover and actually start doing a MACE practice test regularly to get used to the question style. Game changer.

The biggest thing I wasn't prepared for was how tricky the medication error and documentation questions are. They're not just "what does this drug do" — they test your judgment in specific scenarios. I also completely underestimated how much the infection control and residents' rights sections would show up. My study guide had those listed as minor topics but they were everywhere on my actual exam.

Passed last week with an 82%. Happy to share what finally worked if anyone's struggling like I was. The third time prep felt completely different.

Congrats on passing! I'm scheduled for mine in six weeks and the documentation questions are killing me on practice tests too. What I've found helpful is writing out the six rights of medication administration every single morning — sounds basic but it's so easy to second-guess yourself under pressure. I'm averaging around 73% on timed practice sets right now and trying to get that up to at least 78% consistently before test day.

The scenario-based questions really are a different beast. I work in memory care so I thought I'd be solid on residents' rights but the MACE frames those situations in ways that aren't always intuitive. One tip from my instructor: whenever you're unsure between two answers, ask yourself which one protects the resident first AND follows proper chain of command. That eliminated a lot of my wrong guesses. Also — don't skip the controlled substance tracking section. It showed up more than I expected.

82% on your third try is genuinely impressive — that's not just squeaking by. The jump from 71% to 82% tells me your new approach actually fixed the real gaps, not just luck. What study guide ended up being most useful for you?
