Finally passed the MAC exam after two attempts — here's what actually helped

So I passed my MAC certification last week and I'm still kind of in shock honestly. First attempt back in March I scored a 68 and needed a 75, which was brutal after how much I'd studied. The problem was I was using outdated materials and not really understanding the clinical reasoning questions — I was just memorizing facts.

Second time around I completely changed my approach. I found a solid MAC practice test that actually mimicked the question style, and that made a huge difference. The study guide I used this time broke down the medical assisting competencies by domain instead of just topic, which helped me see where I was actually weak (turns out administrative procedures were killing me, not the clinical stuff I was obsessing over).

My biggest exam tips: don't skip the EHR documentation questions, they show up way more than you'd expect. And give yourself at least 6 weeks of structured prep, not just cramming. Anyone else studying for this right now? Happy to answer questions about what the test day experience is like.

Congrats! I'm sitting for mine in about five weeks and this post is exactly what I needed. I failed my CMA attempt two years ago and switched to the MAC because my program is affiliated with NCCT. The administrative section is where I'm struggling too — specifically medical billing and coding overlap. Did the practice test you used have a lot of scenario-based questions or more straightforward recall stuff?

The EHR tip is so real. I passed in January and I was completely unprepared for how many questions involved documentation workflows and patient record scenarios. I'd spent like 80% of my study time on anatomy and pharmacology thinking that'd be the hard part. Also the infection control stuff — OSHA standards came up several times. Wish I'd read this post before my first attempt lol.

Six weeks is the sweet spot IMO. I tried to do it in three and it showed. Spaced repetition for the terminology, timed practice tests the last two weeks, and actually sleep the night before — sounds obvious but I didn't the first time and it wrecked me.
