Finally passed M-STEP after two attempts — here's what actually helped

So I've been stressing about the M-STEP for months now. Failed my first attempt back in March by just a few points, which was honestly crushing because I felt like I had studied pretty hard. The reading comprehension section completely wrecked me — I didn't realize how much they focus on evidence-based questions until I was sitting there in the room feeling totally blindsided.

After that I got serious. I found a decent M STEP practice test online and just drilled it over and over, timing myself so I could get used to the pacing. I also went through a study guide that broke down the math section by strand, which helped me figure out where my weak spots actually were (turns out it was data and statistics — who knew). Spent about 3 weeks, maybe an hour a night.

Retook it last Tuesday and passed with a score of 78. If you're preparing right now, the biggest tip I can give is don't just read through material — actually do timed practice under test conditions. Anyone else have exam tips that helped them specifically with the ELA portion?

Congrats on passing! I took it last fall and the ELA section was rough for me too. What helped was reading the questions BEFORE the passage — sounds basic but it completely changed how I read. I knew exactly what to look for instead of going back three times. Also the vocabulary-in-context questions trip people up but they're usually answerable just from the surrounding sentences if you slow down.

I'm scheduled for mine in six weeks and honestly panicking a little reading this thread. The math has me worried more than ELA. Did the study guide you used cover all grade-level content or was it more general? I've been using Khan Academy but I'm not sure if it's specific enough to what they actually test. Also how many questions is the full exam? I've seen different numbers depending on where I look.

Two attempts is nothing to be embarrassed about — plenty of people need more than one shot at this. The practice tests are genuinely the best prep, just make sure whatever you're using is aligned to current Michigan standards. Good luck to everyone else still grinding through it.
