Finally passed LLN after failing twice — here's what actually helped

Okay so I've been putting off posting this but I want to help anyone else who's been struggling with the LLN the way I was. Failed it in November, failed again in February, and honestly almost gave up on the whole thing. My reading comprehension score kept dragging me down even though my numeracy was fine. My supervisor told me I needed at least a Level 3 across the board to move into the supervisor trainee program, so I had no choice but to keep trying.

What finally clicked was actually being strategic about it. I stopped just doing random practice questions and started using a proper LLN practice test format that mirrors the actual timing and question types. The numeracy section has that tricky embedded information style where the answer isn't obvious — you have to pull data from a chart or passage and apply it. That was killing me. I also found a solid study guide that broke down reading strategies specifically for workplace-style texts, which is very different from school English.

Sat it again in April and got Level 4 reading, Level 3 numeracy. If anyone wants specific exam tips or to know what resources I used, just ask below. Happy to share everything.

This is so encouraging, thank you. I'm sitting mine next month for a construction apprenticeship application and I'm most nervous about the reading speed. Did you find the actual exam harder than the practice versions? I've been doing timed practice runs but I still feel like I'm rushing at the end of each section.

Congrats on passing! Two attempts is honestly more common than people admit. Most people I know in my cohort needed a second go. The timing pressure is real and it's not something you can just wing — consistent practice over a few weeks makes a huge difference.

The embedded information questions are no joke — totally agree with you there. I passed first go but only barely on numeracy. The tip that helped me most was reading the question BEFORE reading the passage, so you know what to look for. Sounds obvious but I wasn't doing it and it wasted so much time. Also the language in the passages is really specific to industry contexts so if you can find workplace-style reading material to practice with, do it.
