How much does MN Bar actually matter to employers right now?

I've been doing a lot of searching on "MN Bar" and while the certification looks solid on paper, I'm getting mixed signals about how much employers actually care in 2026.

Some job postings list it as required, some say "preferred," and some don't mention it at all even for roles where it seems relevant.

For those of you who have your MN Bar certification — has it actually opened doors or increased your rate? Or has the job market shifted to the point where it's table stakes rather than a differentiator?

Context: I'm entering the field and trying to decide whether to prioritize MN Bar or invest the same time into MN Bar - Minnesota Bar Exam.

Also — how current does the cert need to be? If I pass now, is a 2-3 year old cert still valuable or do employers want recent?

Worth mentioning: the free mn bar consumer protection covers exactly the areas people tend to struggle with most.

Same boat a few months ago. Here's what I'd tell myself:

The MN Bar exam is more concept-focused than the study guides suggest. They test whether you understand MN Bar, not just whether you can define it.

My tip: when you see a scenario question, mentally walk through it step by step before looking at the answers. The wrong answers are designed to catch people who jump to conclusions.

Good luck — the fact that you're doing this level of prep means you're going to be fine.

The honest answer is: it depends a lot on your background.

If you're already working in this field, the MN Bar exam is testing knowledge you probably use daily. The "MN Bar" sections will feel familiar.

If you're coming in from outside, give yourself an extra 2 weeks and really focus on the practical application questions.

The practice tests here are worth doing repeatedly — I did the same test bank multiple times and found new questions I'd missed each time.

I'm in a similar boat honestly. I've been studying for a few months now and just pulled a 74 on a practice set last week, which felt decent but I know I need to get more consistent before I sit for real. I'm aiming to take it in late August. One thing that helped me click with some of the trickier material was working through the free mn bar property rights and zoning laws questions -- property was my weak spot and it wasn't as bad as I expected once I drilled it.

On your actual question, I think it depends a lot on the specific firm or role. From what I've seen, smaller MN practices tend to care more than big regional employers who hire from multiple states and just want you licensed period. It's frustrating that the signals are so mixed but I've stopped worrying about it and just focused on passing first. Everything else gets easier after that.
