I have the option of taking my AL Bar - Alabama Bar Exam exam online at home or going to a testing center. Trying to figure out which is better for me.
Arguments for online:
- No commute stress
- Familiar environment
- More flexible scheduling
Arguments for testing center:
- No home distractions
- More controlled environment
- Better equipment potentially
My main concern with the online version is proctoring — I've heard some certification exams have very strict rules about what's allowed in the room. One wrong move and you're flagged.
Has anyone taken AL Bar both ways? Or specifically the online version? How was the experience? And does the difficulty or question format actually differ based on how you take it?
Also — any issues with the "AL Bar" type content being harder in one format vs the other?
The free al bar criminal procedure helped me understand what the exam actually tests rather than just what the material covers.
I actually failed the first time by a few points. Total gut punch. But passed on the second attempt with a comfortable margin.
What changed: I stopped trying to memorize answers and started actually understanding the material. Specifically on AL Bar exam — I went back to basics and worked forward from first principles.
Also switched from reading to doing. Less time with the textbook, more time on practice questions with detailed answer explanations.

Passed AL Bar 5 months ago. Happy to share what I remember.
On the "AL Bar exam" stuff specifically — I found the practice tests here were actually harder than the real exam on those questions. Which was great because going in I felt more prepared than I needed to be.
The time pressure is real though. I came in with maybe 8 minutes to spare and that was after skipping the ones I wasn't sure about and coming back.
Don't try to cram the night before. Seriously. Last-minute stress makes you second-guess things you actually know.
Quick update: just cleared 84% on my most recent AL Bar practice set using free al bar criminal procedure. Sitting for the real thing in 4 weeks. Feeling cautiously optimistic.
Failed first attempt, came back to this thread. The consensus on al bar practice test being the make-or-break area is right. Focusing almost exclusively on applied questions this time around.
