SSPO Incident Report Writing — What Are Graders Actually Looking For?
Report writing shows up on almost every law enforcement exam I've looked at, but the SSPO version seems particularly detail-oriented. I took a mock test last week and my narrative was marked down for being "too general." What exactly does a passing incident report look like on the SSPO?
From what I've gathered, graders want: accurate chronological order, correct use of factual language (not speculation), proper names and descriptions, and no unnecessary filler. The ability to produce clear written documentation is huge for a police officer because reports are used in court — so the exam simulates real pressure.
I've been working through the SSPO Incident Report Writing Skills quiz to practice structuring responses. My main struggle is being concise without leaving out essential details. If anyone has scoring rubrics or examples of strong vs. weak reports, please share.
A retired patrol sergeant told me: write like you're explaining to a judge who wasn't there. Who, what, where, when, how — in that order, every time. Skip words like "appeared to" or "seemed." Stick to what you directly observed. For the SSPO specifically, keep sentences short and avoid passive voice. Graders skim fast and active, direct sentences stand out positively.
Strong reports on the SSPO usually follow the FARO format: Facts, Actions, Results, Observations. If you structure every paragraph around that, you won't miss critical elements. I got feedback after my conditional offer that my report writing score was "above average" and I attribute it entirely to that framework. Takes about a week of daily practice to make it feel natural.
Quick update: just cleared 79% on my most recent SSPO practice set using police officer practice test pdf. Sitting for the real thing in 2 weeks. Feeling cautiously optimistic.
Coming back to this thread — just passed my SSPO yesterday. Everything about the sspo practice test section is accurate. For anyone still studying, the police officer practice test pdf was the closest thing to the real exam I found.
