TOEFL exam day checklist — what to bring and what to expect at the center
After six weeks of preparation I finally have my toefl exam date booked. I want to make sure I don't make any procedural mistakes on test day that could invalidate my score or waste my registration fee. The ETS website lists the basics but I'm looking for real-world advice from people who have been through it recently.
A few things I already know: bring a valid passport (not just a national ID card), arrive 30 minutes early, and no electronic devices in the testing room. What I'm less sure about is the check-in process — I've read that they photograph you and scan your palm vein, which sounds intensive for a language test.
Practicing under timed conditions with full-length toefl ibt mock tests beforehand was the most useful thing I did to simulate exam day pressure. The full practice tests on TOEFL Reading Comprehension helped me manage the reading section's pacing. Any tips about the break between sections or managing fatigue during the four-hour sitting?
The palm vein scan is standard at most ETS centers now — it's quick and nothing to worry about. Use your 10-minute break between the listening and speaking sections wisely: eat a small snack, drink water, and step outside if the center allows it. Don't review notes during the break — you'll second-guess yourself. Reset mentally instead.
Bring two valid IDs just in case — some centers require it as backup. Ear plugs are provided but bring your own foam ones if you are sensitive to noise; the test room can be loud with other test-takers speaking their responses. Fatigue is real in hour three; practice full-length sessions at home so your concentration doesn't collapse during the writing tasks at the end.
