CLIA online vs in-person exam — any difference in difficulty?

I have the option of taking my (CLIA) Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments Certification exam online at home or going to a testing center. Trying to figure out which is better for me.

Arguments for online:
- No commute stress
- Familiar environment
- More flexible scheduling

Arguments for testing center:
- No home distractions
- More controlled environment
- Better equipment potentially

My main concern with the online version is proctoring — I've heard some certification exams have very strict rules about what's allowed in the room. One wrong move and you're flagged.

Has anyone taken CLIA both ways? Or specifically the online version? How was the experience? And does the difficulty or question format actually differ based on how you take it?

Also — any issues with the "CLIA" type content being harder in one format vs the other?

Worth mentioning: the free clia laboratory quality systems compliance covers exactly the areas people tend to struggle with most.

Passed CLIA 8 months ago. Happy to share what I remember.

On the "CLIA exam" stuff specifically — I found the practice tests here were actually harder than the real exam on those questions. Which was great because going in I felt more prepared than I needed to be.

The time pressure is real though. I came in with maybe 8 minutes to spare and that was after skipping the ones I wasn't sure about and coming back.

Don't try to cram the night before. Seriously. Last-minute stress makes you second-guess things you actually know.

Failed first attempt, came back to this thread. The consensus on clia practice test being the make-or-break area is right. Focusing almost exclusively on applied questions this time around.

Coming back to this thread — just passed my CLIA yesterday. Everything about the clia practice test section is accurate. For anyone still studying, the free clia laboratory quality systems compliance was the closest thing to the real exam I found.

Honestly the format barely mattered for me, what mattered was finding time to study at all. I work full time and I've got two kids, so I did most of my prep in 20 minute chunks on my lunch break and after everyone went to bed. I went with the testing center in the end just because I knew I'd get distracted at home, but if you've got a quiet room and decent discipline online is totally fine. The exam itself wasn't harder either way. Same questions, same difficulty, it's really just about where you're comfortable sitting for a couple hours.

One thing that actually helped me fit it in was using short question sets instead of trying to read whole chapters when I was tired. I leaned on these free clia laboratory quality systems compliance questions a lot because I could knock out a handful waiting in the car or during a coffee break. Didn't feel like studying so much, which is kind of the point when you're squeezing it around everything else. Pick whichever setting stresses you out less and just keep showing up to the small sessions.
