I have been out of high school for 9 years and I am enrolling at Eastern Kentucky University in the fall. Just found out I need to take the KYOTE Kentucky Online Testing math assessment for placement, and I am genuinely nervous. I took pre-calc in high school and got a B but that was almost a decade ago and I remember almost none of it.
I do not want to place into developmental math — not because I am too proud, but because it adds an entire extra semester and I am already paying for this out of pocket. I have about 6 weeks to prep. Is KYOTE harder than the ACCUPLACER or closer to the SAT math level?
Also — does anyone know if calculators are allowed? I have seen conflicting information on that.
Khan Academy is legitimately good for this. Go through the Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and precalculus units in order. 6 weeks is enough if you put in an hour a day. Do not skip the practice problems, just watching the videos does nothing.
Tested out of developmental with a week of review. Algebra basics come back faster than you think once you actually work through problems. The no-calculator rule is the real adjustment.
The placement cutoffs vary by school and by course. Make sure you ask EKU specifically what score gets you into College Algebra vs College Math vs developmental. Sometimes a score of 18 is enough for one track but not another.
KYOTE math is generally considered comparable to a solid Algebra II level. If you can get comfortable with linear equations, systems, quadratics, and basic function notation you will be in decent shape. Calculators are NOT allowed on the math portion — that tripped up several people in my cohort.
