Finally passed my KY driver's license test after failing twice — here's what worked

Okay so I'm not gonna sugarcoat it — I failed the Kentucky DMV exam twice before I finally got my score up and passed last Tuesday. The first time I walked in completely cold and got a 68, which isn't even close to the 80% you need. Second attempt I studied for like two days and still bombed the road signs section. I was honestly embarrassed.

What finally clicked was actually committing to a real KY DMV practice test routine instead of just skimming the driver's manual once. I did timed practice tests every night for a week, and I kept a notebook of every question I got wrong. The study guide material on road signs and right-of-way rules is where most people seem to struggle — at least that was my experience.

Has anyone else had trouble with the signs section specifically? I'd love to hear what exam tips helped you get through it, especially for anyone who's taken it at the Lexington or Louisville branches where the queues are insane.

The signs section got me too on my first try. What helped me was grouping them by shape — octagons, triangles, diamonds — instead of trying to memorize each one individually. Once I had the shapes down, the colors made sense too. I passed with an 88 on my second attempt and honestly the practice tests were like 90% the reason why. Stick with it.

I took mine at the Frankfort office and honestly the wait was brutal but the test itself wasn't as hard as I expected. My biggest tip: don't rush the questions. I second-guessed myself on a couple right-of-way scenarios and changed my answers, which ended up costing me. First instinct is usually right. Also make sure you actually know the blood alcohol limits and following distance rules — those showed up multiple times for me.

Congrats on passing! Two fails and then a pass is honestly a story a lot of people don't tell but should. The manual is dry as anything but you gotta read the Kentucky-specific sections. Generic practice tests miss some of the local rules.
