Finally passed ILAC after two attempts — here's what actually helped

Okay so I've been lurking here for months and I figured it was time to actually contribute something useful. I failed my first ILAC attempt back in February — not by a lot, but enough to sting. The listening section completely caught me off guard. I thought my English was solid enough that I could just walk in, but the academic context stuff tripped me up way more than I expected.

For my second attempt I spent about six weeks being really deliberate about it. I used an ILAC practice test almost every day for the last two weeks, just to get comfortable with the pacing and question types. That repetition honestly made the biggest difference. I also found a study guide that broke down the grammar rules in a way that finally clicked for me — I'd been making the same tense errors for years without realizing it.

For anyone prepping right now: don't underestimate the reading speed requirements. My biggest exam tip is to practice skimming for main ideas first, then go back for details. I finished with a few minutes to spare instead of scrambling. Happy to answer questions if anyone's going through the same thing.

Congrats on passing! I'm about four weeks out from my exam and the listening section is exactly what I'm worried about too. Can I ask which practice tests you were using? I've been doing random ones I find online but I'm not sure they're actually representative of the real thing. Also did you do any specific prep for the writing portion or was that more natural for you?

The tip about skimming first is real. I did the same thing and it saved me. I'd also add — don't skip the speaking prep even if you feel confident. I almost did that and my tutor basically dragged me into doing mock sessions anyway. Turns out I was hedging way too much in my answers, saying 'maybe' and 'possibly' constantly, which apparently signals lower proficiency. Direct, confident answers matter more than I thought.

Two attempts is nothing to be ashamed of — plenty of people need three. The fact that you analyzed what went wrong and came back with a plan says a lot. Good luck to everyone still in prep mode, it's genuinely worth the effort once you get there.
