Finally passed my Illinois notary exam after two attempts — here's what worked

So I just got my approval letter last week and I'm still kind of shocked. Failed my first attempt back in March by three points, which was honestly humiliating because I'd been a paralegal for six years and figured I already knew most of this stuff. Spoiler: I did not. The Illinois-specific rules around prohibited acts and journal requirements are way more detailed than I expected.

What finally clicked for my second attempt was switching up how I studied. Instead of just reading the Secretary of State handbook cover to cover, I started using an IL NOTARY practice test to figure out where my actual gaps were. Turns out I kept getting the acknowledgment vs. jurat questions wrong — like, every single time. Drilling those specifically made a huge difference.

Anyone else studying for this right now? Happy to share the specific topics I focused on or what the IL notary study guide materials I used actually covered. The exam isn't brutal but it's definitely not a walk-through if you go in cold.

Congrats! I passed mine in January and the acknowledgment/jurat distinction tripped me up too. I'd add that the questions about what a notary CANNOT do — like giving legal advice or refusing service based on language — showed up more than I expected. I spent maybe 12 hours total studying over two weeks and that felt about right. The practice tests helped me get comfortable with how the questions are worded, which is half the battle honestly.

Journal requirements definitely showed up on mine — maybe 4-5 questions. Focus on when entries are required and what information has to be recorded. Good luck, you've got this!

This is really helpful, thank you. I'm scheduled for next month and feeling nervous. Quick question — did you find the actual exam harder or easier than the practice questions? I've been going through a study guide but I'm not sure if I'm spending too much time on notarial certificates versus the ethics sections. Also, did journal requirements come up a lot? I've read conflicting things about how much they test that.
