IEM exam score question — is 70% passing or do different states have different cutoffs?
Taking the IEM Industrial Electronic Maintenance Technician exam in about 5 weeks and I'm getting mixed info online about the passing score. Some forums say 70%, others say 75%. My prep scores are hovering around 74-76% and I'm not sure if that's comfortable or borderline.
The exam covers DC/AC circuits, PLCs, motor controls, hydraulics, and pneumatics — and the weighting isn't published anywhere I can find. I'm spending the most time on PLC ladder logic and VFD troubleshooting because those seem to come up constantly in practice questions.
Has anyone taken this recently? Specifically wondering about the troubleshooting section — are the questions scenario-based or more theory/calculation? My hands-on maintenance background helps me with scenarios but I freeze on straight calculation questions under time pressure.
Took it 8 months ago — passing was 70% for my version. The troubleshooting section is definitely scenario-based, not pure calculation. Your field experience should actually help a lot.
74-76% in practice is cutting it close if the actual cutoff is 70 — that leaves almost no buffer. Push to consistently hit 80% before test day.
PLC ladder logic questions were about 20% of my exam. If you can trace rung-by-rung logic and identify faults you'll be fine. Way more practical than academic.
I was in almost the exact same spot about six months ago and honestly almost just rescheduled because I couldn't get a straight answer on the cutoff either. From what I found and what my score report confirmed, 70% is the standard passing threshold, not 75%, so if you're hitting 74-76% on practice you're actually in a decent spot. I'd say don't panic yet.
That said, if circuits are dragging your average down, it's worth hammering that section specifically before test day. I found the free iem electrical systems circuit analysis questions really helped me nail down the stuff I kept getting wrong. Didn't think I'd pass going in but ended up clearing it first try. Just don't stop now when you're that close.
I was in almost the exact same spot last year, honestly almost stopped studying because I couldn't get a straight answer on the cutoff and figured what's the point. From what I found after way too much digging, 70% is the standard passing threshold for the IEM, and I haven't seen any solid evidence that it varies by state. That said, I wouldn't trust 74% as a comfortable margin on practice tests, since the real thing hits harder than most prep materials.
I ended up passing on my first try after I shifted focus to the stuff I kept getting wrong instead of re-reading chapters I already knew. DC fundamentals and motor controls were the ones that saved me. You've got five weeks, that's honestly enough time to plug the gaps if you're specific about it. Don't give up over a number that ends up being fine.
