Anyone else taking the IEGAT soon? How are you preparing?

Hey everyone, I've been lurking here for a while but finally making an account because I'm kind of freaking out about my IEGAT exam coming up in six weeks. My employer is requiring it for a promotion and I honestly didn't even know this certification existed until three months ago. I've been an instrumentation tech for four years so some of the theory feels familiar, but the formal exam format is throwing me off.

I picked up a study guide last week and it's honestly dense — the process control sections especially. I've also been grinding through a IEGAT practice test I found online, which has helped me figure out where my weak spots are (loop tuning and calibration math, if anyone's curious). Scoring around 67% on the practice sets right now, and I need something closer to 80% to feel confident going in.

Would love to hear from anyone who's passed this thing recently. How many hours did you put in? Any specific topics that showed up more than you expected? Any exam tips would be seriously appreciated right now.

Passed mine about eight months ago with a 78. Honestly the calibration math hit harder than I expected — way more of it than the prep materials suggested. I did about 60 hours of study total spread over two months. The practice tests were the most useful thing I did. Do as many as you can, especially timed ones. Your score will jump once you stop second-guessing yourself on the PID questions.

I'm in almost the exact same boat, exam in five weeks. The study guide I have is decent but feels like it skips over transmitter troubleshooting way too fast. I've been supplementing with YouTube videos for the signal processing stuff. What practice test site are you using? I've tried two and one of them felt completely off from what I've heard the real exam covers. Would love to compare notes as we both prep.

Loop tuning tripped me up too but honestly once it clicks it clicks. Draw out the process diagrams by hand — sounds old school but it forced me to actually understand what I was memorizing. Good luck, six weeks is plenty of time if you stay consistent.
