Finally passed my IDC exam after two attempts — here's what worked

So I just got my results back yesterday and I actually passed this time. Genuinely shocked because my first attempt was a disaster — I went in thinking my field experience would carry me and scored a 71, which wasn't even close to what I needed. That was back in February. Spent the last three months actually studying properly instead of just winging it.

The biggest difference this time was using a structured IDC practice test routine. I was doing 20-30 questions every morning before work, then reviewing every single wrong answer instead of just moving on. That review step is where the real learning happens, honestly. I also grabbed an IDC study guide that broke down the divemaster leadership sections — those had killed me on attempt one because I underestimated how much theory was involved versus practical skills.

My exam tips for anyone prepping right now: don't skip the rescue protocols section, it shows up more than you'd expect, and give yourself at least 6 weeks of consistent prep time rather than cramming. Happy to answer questions about what resources I used if anyone's in the same boat I was.

Congrats on passing! I'm sitting mine in about five weeks and the leadership theory is exactly what's scaring me. My dive center instructor keeps saying the written portion trips up candidates who've been diving for years because they rely on muscle memory instead of knowing the actual standards. Did you find the IDC practice test questions close to the real exam difficulty or were they easier?

Two attempts is really common, don't let anyone make you feel bad about it. I passed on my second try too. Honestly the IDC study guide I used had some outdated content so double-check whatever you're using is current — the standards were revised not that long ago and some older prep materials haven't caught up. Rescue scenarios and dive physics were my weak spots, so I basically lived in those chapters for two weeks straight.

The review-every-wrong-answer method is legit. I did the same thing prepping for mine and it's tedious but it works. Six weeks minimum is solid advice — people always underestimate the written component when they've been diving forever. Good luck to everyone else still in the process!
