Finally passed ICS after two attempts — what actually worked for me

So I just got my results back yesterday and I'm honestly still in shock. Passed with an 84 on my second attempt after bombing it pretty badly the first time around (got a 61, which, yeah, rough). I want to share what changed because I wasted so much time the first time doing stuff that just didn't help.

First attempt I basically just read through the NIMS materials and figured that'd be enough. It wasn't. What actually made the difference was grinding through an ICS practice test repeatedly — not just taking it once, but reviewing every wrong answer and understanding the "why" behind it. The command structure questions and the difference between unified vs. single command tripped me up constantly until I really drilled them.

I probably put in around 40 hours total for attempt two, spread over about three weeks. I focused especially on span of control ratios, the incident command system components, and resource management. If you're just starting out, don't skip the study guide sections on finance/admin — I almost did and those questions showed up more than I expected.

Congrats! Honestly this mirrors my experience. The first time I thought I knew the material but the actual exam wording is tricky — they love scenario-based questions where two answers seem right. Doing timed practice tests under pressure is what got me comfortable with that. Span of control was my nemesis too, specifically when they describe a complex incident and ask what's wrong with the setup.

Did you use any specific study guide or just the official FEMA materials? I'm prepping right now and feeling pretty overwhelmed. I've got about a month before my exam date and I'm scoring around 70% on practice questions, which I know isn't where I need to be yet. Wondering if there's something that explains the unified command concept more clearly than the official docs do, because I keep second-guessing myself on those.

The finance/admin section tip is gold — everyone ignores it and then gets surprised. Also: don't just memorize the ICS chart, understand the flow of information between sections. That clicked late for me but made a huge difference on the harder questions.
