Finally passed ICPI after failing twice — here's what actually helped

So I just got my results back yesterday and I finally passed the ICPI exam on my third attempt. Honestly kind of emotional about it because I've been grinding at this for almost eight months. My first two failures were both in the 68-70% range, just short of the passing threshold, and I couldn't figure out what I was missing.

What turned things around was actually being more systematic about it. I'd been reading through the official materials but not testing myself enough. Once I started using a solid ICPI practice test routine — doing at least two timed sessions per week — I started seeing where my knowledge gaps actually were. Pavement design principles and the installation pattern questions were killing me specifically.

I also picked up a study guide that broke down the technical specifications in plain language instead of just restating the ICPI standards verbatim. That made a huge difference for retention. If anyone is prepping right now and wants to talk through exam tips or swap resources, drop a comment below. Happy to share what worked for me.

Congrats!! This gives me hope. I'm sitting mine in about six weeks and the drainage/slope calculation section has me completely lost. Did you find any specific resources that explained that part well? The official handbook reads like it was written for engineers, not contractors. Also curious how many hours a week you were putting in toward the end of your prep.

Third time's the charm — seriously though, don't underestimate how tricky the edge restraint questions are. I passed on my second attempt last year and those caught me off guard. The exam tips I wish someone had given me: don't second-guess pattern orientation answers, and always read the site condition details in scenario questions before jumping to the answer. Context matters a lot on this test.

This is exactly the kind of post I needed to see today. Just failed for the first time last month, still feeling pretty deflated. Going back to basics and building a real study schedule this time. Appreciate you sharing the specifics instead of just saying 'study harder.'
