Failed ICET twice — what finally worked for my third attempt?

I've been trying to pass the ICET for almost a year now and honestly it's been humbling. First attempt I scored a 61, second time a 67 — so close but still not where I need to be. My company requires a 75 to qualify for the senior technician role and I'm running out of patience with myself.

What finally clicked for me was switching up how I studied. I stopped just re-reading the manual and started drilling with an ICET practice test every single morning before work. Even 20-30 questions over coffee made a huge difference in how I recognized question patterns. I also picked up a structured study guide that broke down the electrical theory section, which was killing me on the first two tries.

Anyone else struggled specifically with the motor controls and circuit analysis questions? Those are still my weak spots. Would love to hear what exam tips people used to get over the hump — especially for the theory portions. Testing again in six weeks and really need this to stick.

Motor controls wrecked me too on my first pass. What helped was drawing out ladder diagrams by hand instead of just staring at them. Sounds tedious but after doing maybe 30 or 40 of those things, the logic clicked in a way that reading never did. Also timed practice — I was running out of time on test day because I'd pause too long on the hard ones. Give yourself a hard 90-second limit per question when you drill.

Congrats on sticking with it — that takes real grit. One thing I'd add is don't underestimate the safety and NEC code questions. I assumed I knew that stuff cold and it cost me points. They word those scenarios really specifically and the 'almost right' answers are sneaky. What study guide are you using? I went through two different ones before finding one that actually matched the difficulty level of the real exam.

Six weeks is plenty of time if you're consistent. I passed on my second attempt after going hard for five weeks — roughly an hour a day. The last week I did nothing but review weak areas and honestly that final focused push made the biggest difference. You've got this.
