Failed HSA once already — what actually worked for your second attempt?

So I took the HSA back in March and missed passing by 4 points. Honestly thought I'd studied enough but the clinical decision-making section completely blindsided me. I used one textbook and a random HSA practice test I found online, and clearly that wasn't enough. My employer is covering the retake fee but I only have until August to pass or I lose the reimbursement benefit.

I've been looking at different study guides and there are so many options it's overwhelming. Some people swear by the official AAPC materials, others say third-party resources are better for actual exam simulation. I'm 12 years into healthcare admin but apparently book knowledge doesn't always translate — the wording on the questions is just weirdly specific.

What did your prep actually look like? How many hours, which resources, and did you focus on any particular domains? I'm especially weak on compliance and reimbursement. Any exam tips from people who've been through this would mean a lot right now.

I failed my first attempt too, don't stress too much about it. What turned things around for me was switching to timed practice tests instead of just reading. Once I started doing full 115-question sessions under real time pressure, I started recognizing question patterns faster. Gave myself 6 weeks, studied about 90 minutes a night on weekdays. Passed with a 78 second time around. Compliance and reimbursement clicked once I stopped memorizing and started thinking through scenarios.

Honestly the official study guide is fine for content coverage but terrible for exam simulation. The actual test phrases things in this roundabout way that throws people off. I found a few forums where people posted their weak areas post-exam and I basically built my own review list from those. Compliance, coding accuracy, and patient financial services were the heavy hitters on mine. Also — don't underestimate the ethics questions. I almost did and nearly paid for it.

90 days out, start doing at least 3 practice tests a week. Review every wrong answer, not just the ones you flagged. That's the move. You clearly know the material if you missed by 4 points — it's more about stamina and question interpretation at that point. You've got this.
