Failed HCT twice — what finally worked for my third attempt?

So I've been trying to pass the Health Career Test for about eight months now and honestly I was starting to lose hope. First attempt I scored a 68, second time a 71 — so close but still not there. I work full-time as a CNA and studying around shifts is brutal. What finally clicked for me was ditching the generic flashcard apps and actually committing to a solid HCT study guide that broke down each domain separately, especially the medical terminology and anatomy sections which I kept bombing.

The biggest game-changer was doing timed HCT practice test sets under real conditions — no phone, no pausing, 90 minutes straight. I was consistently rushing through the last 20 questions before I started doing that. After about six weeks of this routine I felt genuinely different walking into the testing center.

Anyone else struggle specifically with the patient care and safety domain? That section still feels broad to me. Would love to hear what exam tips helped others nail that part specifically.

The patient care domain got me too on my first try. What helped me most was focusing on infection control protocols and fall prevention scenarios — those come up constantly. I used a practice test bank that had like 300 questions just on that domain and drilled it for two weeks straight. Went from failing that section to scoring in the 80th percentile. Don't skip the documentation questions either, they're sneaky.

Congrats on sticking with it! I passed on my second attempt and honestly the timed practice thing you mentioned is huge. I'd also add — read every wrong answer explanation, not just the right one. I wasted so much time just noting the correct answer and moving on. Understanding WHY the wrong options are wrong completely changed how I approached the reasoning questions. What score are you targeting?

Three weeks out from my exam date and this thread is exactly what I needed. The medical terminology section is killing me right now. Going to try the timed full-length practice tests this weekend. Good luck to everyone testing soon!
