How long did it take you to pass the GIA diamond grading course exams?
I'm currently enrolled in the GIA Graduate Diamonds program and honestly wasn't expecting the coursework to be this dense. The color grading section alone took me about 3 weeks to feel confident with, and I'm still struggling with the clarity scale when it comes to distinguishing VS1 from VS2 under the loupe.
From what I've read, most people spend around 6-8 months going through the whole program if they're working full time. I'm putting in about 2 hours a day on weeknights and a solid 4-5 hours on weekends. My practice scores on the unit tests are hovering around 78-82%, and I need to pull those up closer to 90% before I feel ready for the proctored exams.
Has anyone gone through the distance education track vs the on-campus track at Carlsbad or New York? I keep hearing the lab sessions in person are irreplaceable for the actual grading practice. The written portion feels manageable but I'm more worried about the practical diamond grading exams.
If you've passed the GD program recently, what did your study schedule look like toward the end? Did you do a full review of all the reference materials or focus mostly on weak spots?
On-campus here, did the 3-week intensive at Carlsbad. The pace is brutal but you're surrounded by other students who are just as stressed which actually helps. Our class average on the final diamond grading practical was around 84%. Worth it for the hands-on time with actual stones.
The written exams are straightforward if you know the 4Cs inside out. I scored 91% on those but only 79% on the practical the first time around. The distance track gives you more flexibility but you're really on your own for building those grading hands.
I did the distance track and finished in about 9 months while working retail in a jewelry store. The color grading practical was definitely the toughest part - I missed it by 2 points on the first attempt and had to retake that section. Just kept drilling with master stones every chance I got.
Don't skip the review diamonds in the study kit - about 40% of my practical exam scenarios felt like variations of those exact specimens. Took me 7 months total from enrollment to completion.
Honestly, I almost dropped the program after week four. The clarity grading just wasn't clicking for me, and I kept second-guessing myself on every stone I looked at under the loupe. I think I failed my first attempt at the clarity practical by one grade on three different stones, which was demoralizing. But I stuck with it, booked extra time in the lab whenever I could, and it eventually started making sense in a way I can't fully explain.
It took me about five months total to finish everything, which is longer than most people I've talked to. Don't let that scare you though. The VS1 vs VS2 thing gets easier once you stop trying to memorize rules and just look at a lot of stones. Like a lot. Your eye calibrates eventually and you start seeing it without overthinking it. If you're still in it, you'll pass.
