Finally passed GCOR after failing twice — here's what actually helped

I'm not gonna lie, I was ready to give up after my second failed attempt at the GCOR. Both times I thought I studied enough but walked out feeling blindsided by the operations rules and the way the questions were worded. My third attempt is scheduled for July and I'm doing things completely differently this time.

The biggest change is that I've been hammering GCOR practice test questions every single day instead of just re-reading the rulebook. I spent maybe 60 hours total across my first two tries just reading, but retained almost nothing under exam pressure. Now I'm doing 30 questions a night and actually tracking which categories I miss. General Code of Operating Rules has a lot of nuance in the signal and speed restriction sections that trips people up.

Has anyone else found a specific GCOR study guide that lays out the track car movements and shoving rules in plain English? The official material is dense and I'm looking for something that breaks it down before I invest more time in the wrong approach again.

The signal indication questions got me too on my first attempt. What helped me was making flashcards for every rule number rather than trying to memorize the narrative. Once I tied the rule number to the scenario it clicked way faster. I passed on my second try scoring an 84 — spent about 3 weeks doing timed practice sets, maybe 45 minutes each morning before work. Don't underestimate the hand signals section, way more questions on that than I expected.

Honestly the best exam tip I ever got was from a coworker who's a conductor: read the question twice before looking at the answers because the GCOR questions are written to catch you on a specific word like 'must' vs 'may.' I kept rushing through practice sets and missing stuff I actually knew. Also the shoving movements rules overlap in ways that are intentionally confusing — make sure you understand the distinctions cold before test day.

Failed once, passed second time with an 88. The practice tests were huge for me — doing them under a timer is a different experience than just reading. You've got this, third time's real if you're putting in the focused work.
