GCC exam — how hard is the business and law section for someone from a trade background?

I've been in residential construction for 11 years and I'm finally going for my general contracting certification. The trade knowledge feels solid but I'm anxious about the business law and contract sections. That's never been my strong suit and I've been putting this off partly because of it.

I've been studying for 5 weeks at about 90 minutes per day. My scores on the technical sections are around 79% but I'm only hitting 54% on the business and legal content. That gap is concerning with the exam 3 weeks out and I'm not sure the best way to close it fast.

My state requires a 70% overall to pass. I keep wondering if a strong technical score can offset weaker numbers on the legal portion or if it's scored section by section — does anyone know how the scoring actually works?

Watch out for the financial management questions — markup vs. margin is a trap that catches a lot of tradespeople. Make sure you can work through those problems quickly and accurately.

I was in the same spot. Spent 2 weeks hammering lien law and contract basics and went from 55% to 74% on that content. It's very learnable once you commit to it specifically.

In most states it's scored overall, not by section. So a strong technical score does help — but I wouldn't let yourself drop below 60% on any one section just to be safe.

The NASCLA study manual covers the business law content well. I used the flashcard set from it and that alone moved my score noticeably in about 10 days.

Honestly, I was in almost the exact same boat six months ago — 9 years in the trades and terrified of the business and law portion. The thing that actually clicked for me was stopping trying to memorize statutes and instead just focusing on what a contractor is legally responsible for in a dispute. Once I started thinking about it from the "who's liable and why" angle instead of trying to recite code, it made way more sense. The lien laws especially — work through a few sample scenarios and they stop feeling abstract.

One other thing: don't sleep on project management questions because they show up more than you'd expect and they're honestly easier points to grab. I used the free gcc construction project management and planning questions to build confidence before I even touched the business law stuff, and it helped me go into the harder sections less panicked. You've got the trade knowledge — that's the hardest part to fake. The rest you can grind through.
