Hey everyone, I've been lurking here for a while but finally decided to post. I'm a financial counselor working at a credit union and my supervisor basically told me I need to get FICEP certified by end of year. I have about 10 weeks to prep and honestly I have no idea where to start. The official materials feel pretty dry and I'm not sure I'm retaining much just reading through them.

I found a FICEP practice test on this site that seemed decent but I'm wondering if anyone has gone through the full certification process and can tell me which content areas are actually emphasized on the real exam. There's so much in the study guide that I don't know what to prioritize — budgeting frameworks, credit counseling theory, bankruptcy basics — it's a lot.

My goal is to pass on the first attempt. I'm putting in about 6 hours a week right now. Anyone who's been through it recently, what worked for you? What would you do differently?

I passed FICEP last March after about 8 weeks of prep. Honestly, the credit counseling and debt management sections were heavier than I expected — don't sleep on those. I used a combination of the official study guide plus a few practice tests to get comfortable with the question format. The real exam felt pretty scenario-based, so understanding HOW to apply concepts mattered more than just memorizing definitions. 6 hours a week is solid if you're consistent.

Same boat a year ago! I failed my first attempt because I underestimated the bankruptcy and foreclosure content. It's only like 15% of the material but the questions are tricky. Second time around I focused way more on case-study style practice. One thing — if you're finding the official materials dry, try rewriting the key concepts in your own words. Sounds basic but it helped me internalize things I'd been reading passively for weeks.

10 weeks is plenty of time if you're organized about it. I'd suggest blocking the last two weeks purely for practice tests and reviewing weak spots. Don't cram new material that late — just drill and reinforce. You've got this.
