Finally passed my FFL exam after two failed attempts — here's what worked

Okay so I've been meaning to post this for a while. I passed my Federal Firearms License dealer exam last month and honestly I was starting to think it was never going to happen. Failed the first time because I underestimated how deep the ATF regulations go — I thought I could just skim the Gun Control Act and wing it. Nope. Second attempt I scored a 71, which is passing, but I wanted to do better so I rescheduled and hit 84 on my third try.

What actually moved the needle for me was finding a solid FFL practice test that mirrored the real question format. Multiple choice with those tricky "which of the following is NOT" phrasing that throws you off if you're not used to it. I drilled those for about two weeks, 45 minutes every morning before work.

I also grabbed an FFL study guide that broke down Form 4473 completion requirements section by section — that alone probably accounted for 8-10 questions on the exam. If anyone wants exam tips or has questions about what to focus on, drop them below. Happy to help.

This is exactly what I needed to read today. I'm scheduled for my first attempt in three weeks and I've been second-guessing my prep. The 4473 section trips everyone up from what I've heard — my study group spent an entire Saturday just on prohibited person categories and still found gaps. Did you find the bound book recordkeeping questions as heavy as people say, or was it more ATF inspection procedure stuff?

Congrats on the pass! I went through something similar last year. Honestly the biggest thing for me was understanding the transfer timeline rules — specifically the three business day default when NICS doesn't return a proceed. I'd read it a dozen times but until I did practice questions on it the concept didn't really stick. Muscle memory from drilling is real.

Three attempts takes guts to stick with it — respect. The Form 4473 tip is gold, I've seen people blow past that section thinking it's just paperwork basics. It's not. Good luck to everyone testing soon.
