Finally passed my FDC exam after failing twice — here's what worked

Okay so I've been lurking here for a while and wanted to share my experience because I wish someone had told me this stuff before I went in the first two times. I'm a deputy at a mid-sized county department and my supervisor basically said get the FDC certification or don't expect a promotion. No pressure, right? Failed the first attempt with a 68 (passing is 75) and the second with a 71. I was devastated.

What finally clicked for me was actually slowing down and being honest about my weak spots. Fire behavior and building construction were killing me — I kept rushing through those sections thinking I had them. I found a solid FDC practice test online that mimicked the actual format pretty closely, and I made myself do timed runs without looking anything up. That discipline alone probably added 8 points to my score.

If you're just starting out, don't skip the study guide phase. I know it feels slow, but mapping out the topic domains first saved me from wasting time on stuff that barely shows up. Happy to answer questions — third time's a charm, scored an 81.

Congrats on passing! I'm in the same boat right now, sitting at 6 weeks out from my first attempt. The building construction section is rough — there's so much terminology and I keep mixing up Type II and Type III construction. Did you use any specific resources for that or just grind practice questions? Also, how many questions was your actual exam? I've seen different numbers floating around online.

This is encouraging to read. I failed once with a 72 and honestly thought about just dropping it. My department doesn't require FDC but it came up in my annual review as something that would set me apart. The exam tips I keep seeing say to focus on ICS and command structures heavily — that matched my experience, that section felt like half the test to me. Anyone else notice that?

Timed practice runs are underrated advice. I did that for my EMT cert and it made a huge difference. You figure out real fast which topics slow you down versus which ones you just need to trust yourself on. Good luck to everyone prepping — you've got this.
