Failed my ESRI exam twice — what finally helped me pass

I've been in GIS for about four years now and kept putting off getting certified because, honestly, I thought my on-the-job experience would be enough. It wasn't. Failed the ESRI technical certification the first time by 12 points, second time by 6. Both times I walked out thinking I knew the material and both times the results proved otherwise.

What finally made a difference was actually being systematic about it. I found a decent ESRI practice test that mimicked the format pretty closely — multiple choice with some scenario-based questions — and I made myself do it under timed conditions instead of just casually clicking through. That exposed the gaps I didn't know I had, especially around coordinate systems and map projections. I also finally sat down and built out a proper study guide instead of just reviewing random ArcGIS Pro docs.

Third attempt I passed with a 78. Not a perfect score but I'll absolutely take it. For anyone else grinding through this — what resources did you use? And did anyone else find the spatial analysis section harder than expected?

The spatial analysis questions wrecked me too. I kept confusing when to use spatial join vs. intersect in specific workflows. What helped was drawing out the scenarios on paper before diving into the software. Also, the exam tips on the official ESRI training site are weirdly vague, so I leaned more on community resources. Congrats on passing — three attempts takes real persistence.

I'm currently in the middle of studying for mine and this thread is both encouraging and terrifying. How long did you study each attempt? I've been doing about 90 minutes a day for six weeks and I feel okay on coordinate systems but my SQL in attribute queries is shaky. Did that come up much for you? Also which practice test did you use — was it a free one or paid?

Congrats! For the SQL stuff someone mentioned — honestly just memorize the WHERE clause syntax and double-quote vs. single-quote rules for field names vs. strings. That trips people up constantly and it's totally learnable once you see the pattern a few times.
