Finally passed my EPA 609 cert after failing twice — here's what worked

So I work at a small auto shop and my boss has been on me for months to get my EPA 609 certification so we can legally handle refrigerants in-house. I failed the first attempt back in February (got a 63, needed a 70) and then failed again in April by two questions. I was honestly ready to give up and just keep sending AC jobs to the dealer down the street.

What finally turned it around was actually drilling with practice tests instead of just re-reading the study guide. I spent about 4-5 hours over a week on the EPA 609 Refrigerant Regulations & Compliance practice tests, focusing hard on the leak detection rules and the refrigerant sales restriction questions — that stuff kept tripping me up. Third attempt I scored an 82.

Has anyone else struggled specifically with the refrigerant containment and venting prohibition questions? Those felt like the trickiest part of the whole 609 EPA test for me. Happy to share more about what I focused on if it helps anyone else studying right now.

Congrats on passing! I went through the same thing last fall. The venting prohibition and de minimis exemption questions are definitely where most people lose points — the wording is just deliberately confusing. What helped me was writing out the exact pound thresholds by hand a few times. Once those numbers were locked in my head, the rest of the epa 609 certification test felt pretty manageable. Three attempts is nothing to be ashamed of either, plenty of techs I know took multiple tries.

Quick question for anyone who knows — does the epa 609 cert expire? I passed mine about six years ago and someone at a trade show told me I might need to retest. I can't find a straight answer anywhere. Also, is the test the same whether you take it through MACS or one of the other approved programs? The practice questions I've seen seem pretty consistent but I wasn't sure if the actual exams vary much by testing provider.

Good tip on the practice tests. I used the EPA 609 Refrigerant Regulations & Compliance 2 one the week before my test and it seriously prepared me for the refrigerant sales restriction questions. Passed on my first try with an 84. Just keep hammering the practice questions until the wrong answers start feeling obviously wrong — that's when you know you're ready.
