I'm signed up to take the EPA 609 next month. I work as a shop tech and we mostly deal with MVAC systems, so I'm hoping my hands-on experience translates. From what I've read, the test covers refrigerant handling, recovery procedures, and the relevant regulations - but I want to know which areas carry the most weight.
I've been going through study materials for about 10 days now. The regulatory content around venting prohibitions and approved refrigerant types is trickier than I expected. Section 609 is narrower than the 608 exam since it's mobile A/C specific, but there's still enough nuance in the regs to trip you up if you're not careful.
My plan is 1.5 hours a day for the next 3 weeks, focusing heavily on recovery equipment requirements and refrigerant container handling rules. Techs at my shop said it's fairly manageable if you know the fundamentals, but nobody could tell me the actual pass rate - I couldn't find it published anywhere official either.
Anyone who's taken it recently - are there a meaningful number of questions on R-1234yf vs R-134a distinctions? That's getting more relevant as newer vehicles come in and I want to weight my prep correctly.
Took it 3 months ago. Refrigerant container color coding and disposal rules showed up multiple times - don't skip that section. Recovery procedures were the biggest chunk by far.
The rules around who can purchase refrigerant containers over certain sizes caught me off guard on my first try. Make sure you know those purchasing restriction specifics.
R-1234yf questions were maybe 15-20% of what I saw. The bulk of it is still recovery equipment certification requirements and proper handling procedures for older refrigerants.
I passed first attempt with about 2 weeks of prep at 1 hour a day. Focused almost entirely on recovery equipment and approved procedures. Didn't feel rushed at all during the exam.
