Finally passed EPA 608 Universal after failing twice — what actually worked

So I've been trying to get my EPA certification for about four months now and honestly it's been a rough ride. I work HVAC for a small contractor in Phoenix and my boss has been on my case to get the 608 Universal cert done before summer hits. Failed the Type I section the first time because I completely blanked on refrigerant recovery requirements, and the second attempt I got tripped up on low-pressure systems. The epa certification exam doesn't mess around when it comes to the technical stuff.

What finally turned things around was actually drilling with the EPA 608 Universal Practice Test on this site every morning for two weeks straight. Like 45 minutes before work, no shortcuts. I focused hard on the ozone depletion stuff, Section 608 recovery requirements, and the refrigerant classification charts. Passed with an 84 on my third try last Tuesday.

Anybody else find the Type III low-pressure section the hardest part? The centrifugal chiller questions caught me off guard both times I failed. Happy to share my study notes if it helps anyone else grinding through this.

Congrats man, that persistence paid off. Type III wrecked me too — those low-pressure system purge questions are brutal. I drilled maybe 300 practice questions total before it clicked. The thing that helped most was understanding WHY low-pressure systems operate in a vacuum during normal conditions. Once that concept made sense, the recovery and leak detection questions got way easier. Don't give up on it.

I took the 609 separately before tackling 608 and I actually think that helped build my foundation. The mobile A/C stuff on the EPA 609 is more straightforward and kinda builds confidence. Are you planning to maintain both or just focus on the universal? My employer requires both on file, which honestly seems like overkill but whatever, more credentials never hurt.

84 is a solid score, nice work. For anyone else studying: the Type II high-pressure section trips people up on superheat/subcooling calculations. Know those cold and you'll pick up easy points.
