Wastewater treatment plant operator question I keep getting wrong on WASTEWATER practice tests

There's a category of question on my Wastewater Operator Certification practice tests that I'm consistently missing and I can't figure out what I'm misunderstanding.

The questions are about wastewater treatment plant operator. Here's the type of question that trips me up: they give me a scenario and ask what the right action is, and I usually narrow it down to 2 answers — then pick the wrong one.

I think my issue is I'm applying the general rule but not accounting for the exception. Can anyone point me to a good explanation of when the standard rule doesn't apply for wastewater treatment plant operator?

I've looked at "wastewater operator" study materials but they explain the concept at the surface level. I need the deeper "why" behind it.

Any specific resources, videos, or even just a plain English explanation would be genuinely helpful. Exam is in 4 weeks.

Quick data point: I spent 8 weeks studying, 2-3 hours a day, and passed with a 75%.

The section on wastewater treatment plant operator took me the longest to feel confident about. Eventually I just drilled practice questions until I could answer them without hesitation.

What testing center did you end up booking? Some of them have much shorter wait times than others right now.

Coming back to this thread — just passed my wastewater-operator-certification yesterday. Everything about the wastewater-operator-certification practice test section is accurate. For anyone still studying, the wastewater operator salary career guide was the closest thing to the real exam I found.

Just wanted to share a quick update since I've been lurking on this thread. I took a full practice test last weekend and scored a 74, which honestly wasn't where I wanted to be but it's way better than the 58 I got two months ago. The scenario-based questions are still tripping me up sometimes but I feel like I'm finally starting to see the pattern in how they're worded.

I'm planning to sit the actual exam in late July. If you're in the same boat I'd say just keep hammering the practice tests and pay attention to which specific scenarios keep biting you. That's what clicked for me.

I failed my first attempt because I was trying to memorize answers instead of actually understanding the process. Honestly it's embarrassing how long I spent on flashcards when that wasn't the problem at all. What changed for me was slowing down and drawing out the treatment train on paper before answering anything, so I could see where in the process the scenario was happening. Once I started doing that, the questions that used to trip me up started making a lot more sense.

The other thing I'd say is don't skip the math even if you hate it. I didn't think I'd see that much of it but it showed up more than I expected and I wasn't ready. Second time around I made sure I could do the flow rate and loading calculations without second-guessing myself, and that alone probably saved me four or five questions. You don't need to be fast, you just need to be confident in the steps.
