NABCEP vs other certs in this field — is it worth it salary-wise?

The honest answer is: it depends a lot on your background.

If you're already working in this field, the NABCEP exam is testing knowledge you probably use daily. The "NABCEP" sections will feel familiar.

If you're coming in from outside, give yourself an extra 2 weeks and really focus on the practical application questions.

The practice tests here are worth doing repeatedly — I did the same test bank multiple times and found new questions I'd missed each time.

I can't speak to the salary numbers yet since I'm still studying, but what's helped me most is focusing on why wrong answers are wrong, not just drilling the right ones. Like, if you understand why a certain string sizing calculation fails under specific conditions, the whole NEC code section clicks into place instead of just floating in your head as a memorized fact. It's slower at first but I've retained so much more doing it that way.

As for whether it's worth it, from everything I've read it seems like the cert matters more in some markets than others. If you're targeting commercial or utility-scale work, it sounds like hiring managers actually look for it. Residential solar seems more mixed. Honestly I'd try to find someone local who has it and just ask them directly, that's probably more reliable than the salary surveys.

Honestly I almost didn't finish the process. About halfway through studying I started thinking the whole thing was a waste of time and the salary bump wasn't going to be real. But I pushed through, passed on my second attempt, and within about four months I'd negotiated a new role that was $9k more than what I was making. So for me it wasn't just the cert, it was the credibility it gave me in the room.

That said it's not magic. If you're in a market where employers aren't asking for it you might not see that jump right away. What I'd say is look at actual job postings in your area and see how often NABCEP comes up as preferred or required. In my area it was everywhere. The study grind is real but I didn't regret it once I got to the other side of it.
