Failed my NRP practical twice — anyone else struggle before finally passing?

So I've been an EMT-Basic for about three years and decided to pursue my NREMT paramedic certification this spring. I figured with my field experience I'd coast through the written portion, but man was I wrong. First attempt I scored a 68 — needed a 70 to pass. Absolutely gutting. I spent the next six weeks grinding through every EMS practice test I could find online, especially focusing on pharmacology and cardiac algorithms, which were killing me.

What finally clicked for me was finding a solid study guide that broke down ACLS protocols in plain language instead of just throwing drug dosages at you. I also started timing myself on practice questions because I was running out of time on the actual exam. Second attempt I hit a 74 — barely passed but honestly felt like I won the lottery.

For anyone else out there prepping right now, what worked for you? Specifically curious if anyone has good exam tips for the psychomotor station. My intubation skills are shaky and my next practical is in three weeks.

The timing thing is huge. I used to read every question three times and burned so many minutes. Once I forced myself to answer and move on, my scores jumped from the low 70s to the mid 80s on practice tests. For psychomotor, I'd honestly just set up your airway kit at home and run the station cold every day. Muscle memory saved me when nerves hit on test day.

Congrats on passing! For intubation practice, see if your training center will let you use the mannequin after hours. I went in four evenings before my practical and it made a huge difference. Visualize the landmarks every single time — don't just go through the motions.

I failed the written twice too before passing on my third try — don't let it define you. The adaptive format messed with my head because I couldn't tell how I was doing. What helped was stopping after every 20 practice questions to review the wrong answers immediately, not just moving on. Also, pediatric respiratory calls were my weak spot and they showed up way more than I expected.
