Finally passed my EMDRIA certification exam after two attempts — here's what worked

So I passed last month and I'm still kind of in shock honestly. First attempt I scored a 71 and needed a 75, which was absolutely gutting after all the hours I'd put in. The problem was I'd been studying mostly from my training notes and supervisor feedback, which covered clinical application pretty well but left huge gaps in the protocol fidelity questions and the adaptive information processing theory stuff.

Second time around I completely changed my approach. I found an EMDR practice test that actually mimicked the question format — those scenario-based questions where you have to pick the BEST response are brutal if you're not used to them. I also put together a proper study guide covering all eight phases with specific contraindications, the standard protocol deviations, and bilateral stimulation variations. Spent about 6 weeks, maybe 90 minutes a day.

Anyone else retaking or currently prepping? Happy to share specific resources or what topics caught me off guard. The preparation curve is real even for experienced clinicians.

Congrats!! I'm sitting for mine in about eight weeks and the AIP theory questions are exactly what I'm dreading. My supervisor keeps telling me the exam is more conceptual than clinical but I'm not sure I believe her yet. Did you find the practice questions were close to the actual difficulty level? That's always my fear with third-party prep materials — they're either way too easy or completely unrelated to what actually shows up.

Two attempts is way more common than people admit. I think there's this weird culture in the EMDR community where everyone acts like they walked in cold and passed, so you feel like something's wrong with you if you struggle. I used a combination of exam tips from my consultation group and honestly just rewatching some of my Francine Shapiro Foundation recordings. The interweaves questions got me the first time too. Your breakdown of what changed is genuinely helpful, thank you for posting this.

The phase 4 vs phase 7 distinction questions are sneaky. Make sure you're really solid on what counts as reprocessing versus stabilization — examiners love edge cases there. Also don't underestimate the ethics section, it's a bigger chunk than most study guides suggest.
