Finally passed my DPO exam after two attempts — here's what worked

So I finally passed my Data Protection Officer certification last week and honestly I'm still a little shocked. First attempt back in March I scored a 61% and needed a 70 to pass. I was devastated because I'd spent six weeks studying and thought I had a solid handle on GDPR Articles 37-39, the lawful bases, and data subject rights. Turns out I was way overconfident on the practical application questions and completely unprepared for the scenario-based stuff.

For my second attempt I completely changed my approach. Instead of just re-reading the regulation, I found a solid DPO practice test that actually mirrors the exam format — timed, scenario-heavy, and with detailed explanations for every wrong answer. That feedback loop was everything. I also built a study guide around the areas where I kept getting tripped up: cross-border transfers, the 72-hour breach notification rule, and DPIA requirements.

Anyone else here prepping for their DPO cert? Happy to share my notes or talk through specific topics that gave me trouble. What's your target exam date?

Congrats! I'm sitting mine in about six weeks and the scenario questions are my biggest fear too. Did you find any particular practice resources that covered the supervisory authority cooperation stuff well? That whole Chapter VII section feels dense and I keep second-guessing myself on which authority has lead jurisdiction when multiple EU countries are involved.

Two attempts is nothing to be embarrassed about — this exam is genuinely hard. I passed first time but I'll be honest, I studied for three months and probably put in close to 120 hours total. The exam tips that helped me most: always read what the question is actually asking (obvious but easy to rush), and when in doubt on a scenario question, ask yourself what would minimize risk to data subjects. That mindset saved me on probably four or five questions.

Thanks for posting this, really needed to hear a success story today. I failed my first attempt last month by four points and I've been pretty discouraged. Going back to basics with practice tests this time around. Did the explanations in the practice questions reference specific GDPR articles? That kind of mapping was missing from my first study approach.
