Finally passed my DOT physical after three attempts — here's what helped
So I've been driving commercially for about six years but my company recently started requiring a formal DOT medical certification on top of the standard stuff. I had no idea there was this much to actually study for — I thought it was just the physical. Turns out the knowledge portion catches a lot of people off guard, especially the hours of service regs and the specific medical criteria for disqualifying conditions.
I failed twice before I buckled down with a solid DOT practice test routine. What really changed things for me was drilling the specific numerical thresholds — blood pressure cutoffs, vision requirements, hearing standards. Those numbers are everywhere on the exam and you can't just approximate them. I also grabbed a study guide that broke down the FMCSA medical examiner handbook in plain English because that official document is dense.
Third attempt I passed with a comfortable margin. Total study time was probably 12-15 hours spread over two weeks. If anyone's prepping right now, happy to share the exam tips that actually moved the needle for me. What's tripping you up the most?
