Finally passed my DMV written test after failing twice — here's what helped

Okay so I've been putting this off for way too long. I moved from Texas to Colorado about eight months ago and kept telling myself I'd get my CO DMV license sorted out "next week." Finally booked a dmv appointment online after my insurance started giving me grief about driving on an out-of-state license. First attempt I walked in totally underprepared and failed with a 68 — you need a 70 to pass in Colorado. Second attempt I studied the handbook cover to cover and still got tripped up on road signs. Super embarrassing.

What finally got me over the line was doing actual timed practice tests online instead of just reading. I found a great one, DMV Arizona Roads & Signs Test #2, and even though it's Arizona-specific, the sign recognition questions are basically identical to what I saw at my actual dmv. Did maybe 3-4 hours of practice spread over a week and passed with an 84 on my third try.

For anyone searching "dmv near me" trying to figure out which location has shorter wait times — definitely use the online appointment system. Walk-ins at my local office were backed up two hours. Scheduled appointment took maybe 20 minutes total.

The road signs section gets so many people, myself included. I failed my first attempt because I confused a regulatory sign with a warning sign — sounds dumb but the colors are similar if you haven't drilled them. What really clicked for me was doing flashcard-style practice rather than reading the manual. Once I could ID each sign in under two seconds I felt way more confident walking in.

I went through something similar when I relocated for work. The dmv cerca de mí situation was rough — nearest office with any availability was 45 minutes away and their site kept crashing when I tried to book. Eventually called in and got a cancellation slot. Also worth noting: CO DMV specifically asks a lot about right-of-way at unmarked intersections. That's where I almost lost it my second time.

Congrats on passing! The online appointment system really is a lifesaver. I've seen people wait three-plus hours for walk-ins at the Aurora location. Book ahead, show up five minutes early, and honestly the whole thing is painless once you're prepared.
