Finally passed my DCAS exam after two attempts — here's what worked

Okay so I've been lurking on this forum for months and I figured it's time to give back since everyone's posts helped me so much. I work for the city and needed to pass a DCAS exam for a promotion to Administrative Manager. First attempt I went in basically blind, scored a 68, which wasn't enough. Embarrassing honestly.

Second time around I actually treated it seriously. I spent about six weeks studying — maybe 45 minutes a day on weekdays, longer on weekends. The biggest game-changer was finding a solid DCAS practice test that actually mirrored the real question format. Multiple choice with those tricky "which is MOST appropriate" questions are no joke. I also worked through a DCAS study guide that covered written communication, supervision principles, and basic math reasoning.

My exam tips for anyone starting out: don't skip the data interpretation section thinking it's easy, and practice under timed conditions from week one. I scored an 84 on my second try. Happy to answer questions if anyone is prepping right now.

This is exactly what I needed to read today. I have my exam in about five weeks and I've been low-key panicking. The supervision questions trip me up every time — like I understand the concept but the answer choices are so close together. Did your study guide break down the reasoning for wrong answers too, or just explain the correct ones? That's where I feel like I learn the most.

Two attempts is nothing to be embarrassed about, a lot of people take three or more. The timed practice advice is real — I did all my practice untimed at first and then completely froze when I saw the clock during the actual exam. Good luck to everyone still prepping!

Congrats on the 84! I passed mine last year for a different title series but same general DCAS format. One thing I'd add is to really pay attention to the official job announcement — sometimes it lists specific competency areas and those are basically telling you what the test covers. Saved me a ton of time not studying irrelevant stuff. The written communication section was 40% of my score so don't sleep on that.
